Akylas, the winner of Greece’s Eurovision 2026 National Final, has spoken openly about the challenges he faced growing up as a different child and the moments that left him fearing for his safety.
Reflecting on his school years, Akylas recalled that while he had good relationships with teachers and enjoyed music-focused education in middle and high school, his early years in primary school were difficult. “Children can sometimes say things that hurt without realizing it. It wasn’t their fault, but it stings,” he explained.
He recounted a harrowing incident on Agias Sofias street in Thessaloniki, where a group of people targeted him and his friends. “They pushed us, grabbed our shirts. We ran to escape and afterward, we couldn’t even walk down that street. It stays with you,” he said. Another frightening moment occurred on the Thessaloniki metro, when he wore headphones to avoid confrontation but still feared harassment.
Despite these experiences, Akylas emphasized the importance of courage and support from bystanders during such attacks. “People can be scared, unsure how to react, but it’s crucial to help when you can,” he added.
Since winning the national final, Akylas has been buoyed by an outpouring of public support. “The love I received this past month has been surreal. It affirmed me and I hope it sends a message to any child watching that they too can express themselves and be accepted,” he said.
However, the artist also noted that not all reactions were positive. He received some hateful comments, reflecting ongoing societal challenges, but remains focused on inspiring others: “Helping a child say ‘yes, I can too’ is so important. Our country is modern, supportive, and celebrates diversity.”
