A 44-year-old woman in Greece’s northeastern Rodopi region was killed by her 53-year-old estranged husband, who later confessed to the killing, according to the findings of a forensic examination.
The woman died within about five minutes of the attack after suffering a single fatal knife wound to the neck.
Forensic examination reveals cause of death
According to the forensic examination, the knife blade penetrated the woman’s neck and reached her right lung, causing severe internal and external bleeding.
No other injuries were found on her body, according to the examination.
The circumstances of the attack were followed by desperate efforts by the couple’s children to save their mother. Their 16-year-old daughter alerted police and Greece’s emergency medical service, while their 19-year-old son rushed his mother to the hospital in an attempt to save her life. She died despite the efforts.
Husband confesses to killing
The 53-year-old suspect confessed to the killing when questioned by authorities.
“I did it because I was angry. I lost control,” he told police.
After the attack, the man attempted to take his own life by consuming a toxic liquid. He was subsequently hospitalized under police guard at Sismanogleio General Hospital in Komotini and was reported to be out of danger.
Couple had been separated
The killing came against the backdrop of a troubled relationship. The couple had moved to Greece from Albania about 20 years ago and had been separated in recent months.
The woman had been preparing to file for divorce and was scheduled to submit the necessary documents on the day she was killed.
People close to the woman said her husband had previously displayed signs of what they described as pathological jealousy and was receiving medication.
The woman had also attempted to initiate procedures for her husband’s psychiatric hospitalization, but the effort was unsuccessful.
