At least five tourists were injured on Thursday evening following a gas explosion at a rented accommodation in the seaside resort town of Asprovalta, near Thessaloniki, Northern Greece.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time, when a gas bottle reportedly exploded inside the “rooms to let” facility. According to a local emergency team, four of the individuals sustained injuries from shattered glass, while a fifth—a 41-year-old—suffered serious burns.
The Volvi Volunteer Rescuers, who were among the first to arrive on the scene, provided immediate first aid before paramedics transported the injured to the Mathytou Health Center for further treatment.
According to local news outlet Voria.gr, authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion. All five tourists are Serbia nationals.
Northern Greece, particularly coastal towns like Asprovalta and the wider Halkidiki peninsula, attract thousands of tourists from the Balkans each summer—especially in August. Many holidaymakers from Serbia travel to the region for its beaches, affordability, and proximity.
