Heavy rain, thunderstorms and colder temperatures are expected in the coming days across much of Greece, with the first snow forecast in northern mountains

Greece is set to experience a sharp turn in weather conditions this week, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, falling temperatures and even the first snow in northern mountain regions, according to forecasts by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY).

Rain and cooler conditions midweek

On Wednesday, unsettled conditions will expand, bringing rain to central and southern mainland regions, as well as Macedonia, the Ionian islands and Thessaly. Athens will see rain and clouds, with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 26°C. Thessaloniki will also see showers, with cooler highs around 22°C.

Strong storms and temperature drop from Thursday

More severe conditions are forecast from Thursday. Heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms will affect most of the mainland, the Ionian, Evia, the Sporades and the northern Aegean, spreading later to the Cyclades and Crete.

The EMY warns that some storms could be strong, while temperatures will drop further. Northern Greece will see highs of just 16–18°C, while other regions will range from 20–21°C. Only the southern islands, including Crete and the Dodecanese, will remain relatively mild at 24–26°C.

Snow in the north by Friday

Friday will bring widespread rain and storms, particularly strong in eastern Macedonia, Thrace and parts of the Aegean islands. Snow is expected in northern mountain regions, marking the first of the season. Temperatures will continue to fall nationwide.

Weekend outlook

Over the weekend, showers will linger mainly in central and southern Greece and the eastern Aegean, though conditions should gradually improve. Winds will remain moderate to strong, while temperatures will hold steady on Saturday before rising slightly on Sunday, especially in central and northern areas.
