Starting Tuesday, November 18, citizens with disability living in Greece can apply for a national disability card, which unlocks benefits and offers secure proof of disability for its holders.
The portable card, which follows printable and digital versions available online via Gov.gr Wallet, enables quick and easy visual identification of people with disabilities.
Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou also said it was aimed at facilitating those who are not familiar with technology.
“Our goal is a state that leaves no one behind and that uses digital innovation to build a fairer and more humane society for all, without barriers,” he added.
Issued for the first time in Greece, the card is a step towards empowerment and equal rights for all. Once the application is completed and assessed, eligible applicants will receive the card in two weeks time by registered mail. Holders can then activate it using a code sent to their mobile phone.
By showing the Disability Card, holders can:
– be served with priority in public services and be provided with any required facility
– use it as a supporting document or proof of identification
– enter museums and archaeological sites free of charge
– use on public transport for free or discounted admission
– use on intercity KTEL buses, for free or discounted fares.
Officials note that the right to free or discounted transportation continues to apply in full for people with disability who do not choose to issue the physical card.
“The disability card is a tool of freedom. We remove obstacles, simplify procedures and give people with disabilities the opportunity to live with dignity,” said Social Cohesion and Family Minister Domna Michaelidou.
Also commenting on the new card, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said equal access for all to cultural offerings was at the core of democracy. The physical disability card, facilitates unhindered entry to museums and archaeological sites, hassle-free and without additional checks.
* Applications are submitted through the National Disability Portal using taxisnet codes. For more info, call the helpdesk on 210-3007606 (Monday – Friday, 09:00 -17:00).
