Applications are set to open next week for Greece’s social tourism program aimed exclusively at retired self-employed professionals, offering subsidized holidays across a wide range of destinations for the 2026–2027 cycle.
The program, run by the country’s public employment agency, is designed for pensioners formerly insured under the self-employed workers’ fund. It will run for 13 months, starting on 1 June 2026, with a total budget of €3 million and 25,000 available holiday vouchers.
How the program works
Eligible participants will be able to apply online between 4 May and 13 May 2026 through Greece’s official government portal. Each approved beneficiary receives a unique voucher, which can be used for up to six overnight stays in accommodation selected from an approved provider register.
A small personal contribution is required in most cases, while additional support is offered in specific regions. In selected islands including Leros, Lesvos, Chios, Kos, Samos, and Rhodes, beneficiaries may receive up to 10 nights fully covered. In designated areas of northern and central Greece, including parts of Evia, Evros, and Thessaly, coverage can extend to 12 nights at no cost.
Seasonal benefits and transport support
The program includes seasonal adjustments, with higher subsidy rates during peak travel periods such as August, Christmas, and Easter. These enhanced rates also apply year-round for accommodation in several of the most affected or supported regions.
In addition to lodging, the scheme subsidizes ferry travel, with participants paying only 25% of the ticket cost. For individuals with disabilities, sea travel is provided free of charge.
Eligibility and selection criteria
Applicants are selected through a points-based system that takes into account factors such as income level, family status, number of dependents, disability status, and previous participation in similar program. Priority is also given to first-time applicants or those who have not recently benefited from the scheme.
For the first time, families with multiple children are included without going through the scoring system, provided they meet the basic eligibility requirements.
Individuals already receiving benefits from other social tourism schemes for the same period are not eligible to participate.
Providers and participation
Tourism businesses, including accommodation providers and ferry operators, can also apply to join the program. Applications for providers open on 4 May and close on 20 May 2026, also via the government’s digital platform.
Existing registered providers are automatically included in the new cycle, provided they update their required documentation.
