A nationwide strike has been announced for Tuesday, December 16, 2025, by the Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY), with widespread participation expected across public sector workers, including the Panhellenic Federation of Local Government Employees (POE-OTA). The strike coincides with nationwide farmer protests at roadblocks, with public sector workers expressing solidarity with their demands.
ADEDY has framed the strike as a response to the government’s new budget, which it criticizes as a “budget of war and exploitation of the working majority.” The federation has called on citizens to join demonstrations organized by trade unions, labor centers, and federations to protest both the state budget and the ongoing agricultural blockades.
Local Government Workers Join the Protest
POE-OTA has urged all municipal employees to take part in the 24-hour strike and join a rally at Syntagma Square at 11:00 a.m. The federation stressed that the government’s borrowing policies are only temporary solutions, burdening citizens with higher municipal fees without improving public services. It also criticized the outsourcing of essential services to private contractors, which it said strains both workers and residents.
The union’s demands include:
- Fair salary increases
- Mass hiring of permanent staff
- Adequate funding for municipalities
- Preservation of public social services
- Repeal of the Voridis provision
- Permanent contracts for temporary workers
- Measures to combat inflation and financial hardship
Teachers Also Participate
Educators in both primary and secondary education are joining the strike to oppose the budget and support the broader labor movement. The Primary Teachers’ Association “Socrates” highlighted the unity between workers, farmers, and citizens in opposing what it calls “an anti-people budget of taxation and war,” demanding funds for wages, healthcare, and education rather than military and corporate interests.
Public Transport Updates
As of now, it remains unclear whether public transport workers will join the strike, with official announcements usually made a few days in advance.
However, bus workers have scheduled a work stoppage for Wednesday, December 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with services expected to resume after 6:00 p.m. The last buses before 10:00 a.m. will operate as usual, and suburban routes in Eastern and Western Attica are expected to run normally.
The stoppage has been called by the OASA Workers’ Union to hold their General Assembly.
