Zakynthos

A large wildfire that began early this morning near Kiliomeno has now engulfed multiple fronts and reached the outskirts of Agalás, with flames also threatening Kerí and the village of Lithakiá. Authorities have issued multiple 112 emergency alerts, ordering evacuations from Agalás towards Kerí and from Lake Kerí towards Zakynthos Town.

The blaze, driven by strong winds and the island’s rugged terrain, is proving extremely difficult to contain. At least one unoccupied house has been destroyed, with local officials reporting that between five and six homes have sustained damage. Farm buildings have also been threatened.

Reports say a hotel in the Apeláti area was evacuated, though another reportedly ignored evacuation orders, requiring immediate intervention by firefighters. More than 60 firefighters, two ground teams, and 17 vehicles are battling the flames on the ground, assisted by two water-bombing aircraft and one helicopter. Fire crews from Patras and Kyllíni have been brought in to reinforce local teams. Authorities are urging residents and tourists to follow evacuation instructions without delay.
