Greek actors are set to stage a nationwide strike on Friday, December 5, after labor negotiations failed to produce a collective employment agreement. The Hellenic Actors Union called the strike, emphasizing that it is the result of 1.5 years of ongoing discussions with major employers in the theater sector.
The actors’ demands include a fully signed collective contract covering rehearsals with full insurance, a weekly salary of €1,250 for 5 to 8 performances, and €65 per performance for 1 to 4 shows. SEI highlighted that despite reaching an agreement before the summer, employers have delayed signing, citing various excuses while actors continued working without formal protections.
Theaters Affected by the Strike
A wide range of theaters are expected to suspend performances on December 5, including:
- Theater EMBASSY: The Countess of Fabrica
- Theater KNOSSOS: Enemy of the People
- Theater “ΤΕΧΝΗΣ”: The Third Wreath
- Theater ALMA: Festen
- Theater PALLAS: Alexandria
- Greek World – THEATRON: Our Big Circus, Neither Forward Nor Back
- Theater ACROPOL: The Dog’s Mother
- Theater ALAMPRA: 2:22 A Ghost Story
- Theater ANESIS: Last Exit, Johnny Blue
- Theater ΒΕΆΚΗ: Don Juan and Baron Munchausen: The Fantastic Adventures (children’s show)
- Theater GLORIA: Ladies’ Tailor
- Theater BIOS: The Lovers
And many others, including performances at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, municipal theaters, and independent venues.
SEI stressed that the strike is not just a demand for fair wages, but a fight for basic labor rights and protections for actors across Greece. Audiences are encouraged to check with theaters for updates regarding canceled or rescheduled performances.
