A 36-year-old doctor from the Greek island of Lesbos has died shortly after giving birth, following serious complications during delivery that led to a dramatic medical emergency and an attempted transfer to Athens for specialized care.

The woman, identified as Magda Pasvouri, gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the hospital in Mytilene, the main town of Lesbos. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly afterwards, triggering an urgent response from medical staff.

Sudden complications after delivery

According to hospital information, the doctor developed severe complications during childbirth on Tuesday, June 23. Her condition worsened quickly, and she was transferred to the intensive care unit where she was placed on a ventilator.

Due to the seriousness of her situation, an emergency air evacuation to Athens was arranged. However, before the transfer could be completed, she suffered a fatal collapse despite efforts by medical teams to stabilize her.

Authorities have stated that the exact circumstances surrounding her death will be officially investigated.

Intensive efforts to save her life

Reports indicate that the patient experienced fever and was placed under treatment shortly after delivery. Her condition later deteriorated further, and she suffered repeated cardiac arrests during transport preparations and medical intervention.

She was eventually transferred to a hospital in Athens while in cardiac arrest, where doctors continued resuscitation efforts, but she did not survive.

A surgical procedure was also carried out in Mytilene hospital to investigate the situation following delivery, with no remaining complications identified.

A respected doctor remembered

Pasvouri was known among colleagues as a dedicated and warm professional who had worked for years in the emergency department of Mytilene Hospital. She had also recently worked with the national emergency medical service, continuing her duties during pregnancy until the sixth month.

Her husband is also a doctor at the same hospital.

Following the tragedy, hospital staff cared for her newborn daughter, who remains in the maternity ward under close supervision.

Widespread grief in the medical community

Colleagues described her as a kind and smiling presence who consistently supported others in difficult situations. The local medical community expressed deep shock at her sudden passing.

Officials from Greece’s public health workers’ union highlighted the severity of the case and extended condolences to her family and colleagues.

Community representatives in Lesvos also paid tribute, describing her as a generous and selfless person who was always willing to help others.

The investigation into the medical causes of her death is ongoing, with officials stating that any findings of responsibility will be fully examined.
