A Greek police officer has been remanded in custody following a deadly traffic accident in central Athens that killed a 63-year-old motorcyclist. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, March 12, at the intersection of Akadimias and Vasilissis Sofias streets.

According to reports, the officer, while on duty, ran a red light and drove against traffic, colliding head-on with the motorcyclist. Both drivers were hospitalized, but the 63-year-old, a father of two, later succumbed to his injuries despite extensive medical efforts.

Eyewitnesses described the collision as severe, with one stating the officer appeared not to be looking ahead and struck the motorcycle at high speed.

The victim’s family expressed profound grief, emphasizing the man’s role as a parent and the urgency for accountability. “Our only demand is justice. The responsible driver’s actions took the life of a young father,” they said.

The police officer now faces criminal charges for negligent homicide and dangerous driving, alongside an internal administrative investigation.
