Greek Police Officer Arrested Over Detainee Assault

A supervising Greek police officer was arrested after assaulting a detainee at a police station in Attica. A criminal investigation and an internal disciplinary inquiry are now underway

A supervising officer with the Hellenic Police was arrested after reportedly using physical violence against a detainee at a police station in the Attica region on Saturday night.

Police officers who witnessed the incident immediately notified the Internal Affairs Service of the Security Forces, which launched the procedures required by law.

Following notification of the competent prosecutor’s office, the officer was arrested under Greece’s fast-track procedure for offenses committed in the act and brought before the judicial authorities.

After the legal process was completed, the officer was released, while a preliminary criminal investigation was ordered to determine whether any criminal liability may arise.

Meanwhile, police officers escorted the detainee to a forensic medical examiner to undergo the necessary examinations.

By order of the Hellenic Police Headquarters, a Sworn Administrative Inquiry (E.D.E.) was also launched to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any disciplinary action is warranted.

In a statement, the Hellenic Police assured it “treats every complaint involving unlawful or unethical conduct by its personnel with the utmost seriousness and immediately initiates all criminal and administrative procedures provided for by law, showing zero tolerance for conduct that is incompatible with the law and the principles of the force.”
