Greek rail authorities are under scrutiny following a near-disastrous incident in October 2024, when a suburban (Proastiakos) train mistakenly entered the Athens Metro tracks. The Regulatory Authority for Railways (RAS) has called OSE and Hellenic Train to provide explanations on March 9.
The event recalls memories of past rail errors, as a misaligned track switch nearly directed the train into the wrong line. The suburban train, which has a larger clearance than Metro trains, could not safely continue in the tunnel. The driver, noticing the error, attempted multiple times to contact the control center without response. Acting outside standard protocol, the driver slowed the train, allowing sensors to detect the mistake and enabling telecontrol to correct the path. The train then reversed about 300 meters to exit the tunnel safely.
The Panhellenic Union of Traction Personnel (PEPE Hellas) documented the incident in a report to RAS and the National Accident Investigation Authority (EODASAAM). The report also criticizes ongoing delays in the suburban network, attributing them to poor maintenance and infrastructure issues. PEPE has called for an immediate investigation and transparency from Hellenic Train, noting that internal reports are often withheld from employee unions.
