More than half of the ambulance fleet serving the greater Athens area is currently out of operation due to mechanical breakdowns and a shortage of spare parts, according to representatives of emergency service workers.
The head of the ambulance workers’ union in Athens described the situation as “almost out of control,” warning that ongoing technical issues are significantly affecting emergency response capacity.
Union raises alarm over equipment shortages
The union has filed a formal complaint with management and the Ministry of Health, citing persistent shortages of basic, low-cost vehicle parts such as brake pads, thermostats, and engine coolant.
According to union representatives, some ambulances have been forced out of service for days at a time due to the lack of these essential components. In some cases, workers themselves reportedly purchased parts to keep vehicles operational and prevent longer downtime.
Concerns over public safety and delays
Union officials say that repeated vehicle failures and delays in repairs are reducing the number of available ambulances, leading to slower emergency response times for patients.
They argue that the combination of mechanical faults and supply shortages is putting both public health and staff safety at risk.
A formal written complaint highlights concerns over the long-term condition of the ambulance fleet, stating that delays in repairs and procurement are worsening operational readiness.
Investigation launched by health service management
Following the complaint, an internal administrative investigation has been initiated to examine the reported issues.
Management acknowledged that a number of ambulances are currently out of service due to technical problems, but disputed claims that more than 50% of the fleet is grounded, stating that the figure is lower and fluctuates daily as repairs are completed and vehicles return to service.
Officials also confirmed that emergency procurement procedures are being activated to address shortages of spare parts and accelerate repairs.
Ongoing review of emergency services
The ambulance service leadership has described the fleet as one of the most challenging operational areas in the national emergency system, noting that its condition requires continuous maintenance and coordination.
