Greece’s weather service issued a severe rain warning for most of Western Greece and Attica on Thursday, January 29.
Storms, heavy rain and localized hail are expected as an incoming low-pressure system dubbed Storm Kristin moves into the region.
The National Meteorological Service (EMY) issued a severe rain warning for much of Western Greece on Thursday as the low-pressure system intensifies weather conditions nationwide.
According to EMY, heavy rain, thunderstorms and hail are expected from early morning through midday in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, the western Peloponnese, and Central Greece.
From midday into the evening, the storm system is forecast to move northeast toward Thrace, before affecting the northern and eastern Aegean islands later at night. In Attica, intense rainfall is expected by noon Thursday, accompanied by strong winds and possible hail.
Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias has forecast two major waves of deteriorating weather expected to impact Attica starting late on Wednesday and into Thursday, and again over the weekend.
Civil Protection authorities in Greece remain on high alert, particularly in areas still recovering from last week’s severe storms, including the coastal suburbs of Glyfada, Voula, and Vouliagmeni, south of Athens. Two people lost their lives during last week’s extreme weather events.
The weather service also warned of possible ferry disruptions due to strong winds.
