The past 24 hours have seen a tragic surge in road fatalities in Greece, with the deaths of three minors in two separate traffic accidents.
The first incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 28, on the provincial road connecting Katerini and Dion in Pieria. A 9-year-old girl lost her life, while her 11-year-old sister and their mother were seriously injured.
According to preliminary reports, the mother, who was driving the vehicle, lost control for reasons that remain unclear. The car veered into the opposite lane and violently struck a tree. Both of her daughters were in the car at the time.
The collision was catastrophic. The 9-year-old girl died instantly, while her older sister and mother were rushed to Katerini Hospital with serious injuries. Emergency responders, including firefighters, worked to extricate the family from the wreckage, while two ambulances transported the injured to medical care.

The second tragedy took place in Kastoria early Thursday morning. Around 5:50 a.m., authorities received a call reporting a serious accident on the national road near Kastoria. At the scene, rescuers found a shocking sight: a white BMW carrying two teenagers, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, had gone off the road and had been completely destroyed, apparently after striking a solid object, possibly a tree.
The rescue operation was extremely challenging. When emergency crews finally extricated the two victims, they were found unresponsive. Both were transported by ambulances to Kastoria General Hospital, where their deaths were confirmed.
Reports indicate that their parents had spent the night searching for them, unable to reach them by phone, before learning of the tragic outcome in the morning.
Police are currently investigating the exact causes of both accidents.
