Rescue operations were launched in two separate incidents in Greece over the weekend, as hikers lost their way in remote mountainous areas on the islands of Crete and Samothrace. Both individuals were located and safely transported by emergency services.

French Tourist Rescued Overnight in Crete

A major overnight rescue effort took place in the region of Agia Roumeli, Crete, where a 21-year-old French tourist lost his bearings while hiking along the trail toward Sougia. According to the Fire Service’s Operations Coordination Center, the young man became disoriented and was unable to proceed or find an exit route.

Authorities were alerted at 11:00 PM, prompting a swift response. Six rescuers from the 3rd Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) based in Heraklion, along with a team from Chania, were mobilized.

The rescue team located the man in the early hours of the morning. He had sustained minor injuries but was able to walk. Rescuers transported him to the port of Chora Sfakion, where an ambulance from the National Emergency Aid Center (EKAV) was waiting. He was then taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.

Lost Hiker Found in Samothrace

A second incident unfolded on the island of Samothrace in the northern Aegean, where a hiker was reported lost in the area known as “Kleidosi Fonias.” The man had become disoriented while exploring the rugged landscape but was eventually located by rescue personnel.

The operation involved four firefighters and two vehicles, who successfully reached the man and transported him to a safe location. He was found in good health and required no medical attention.
