Italian Tourist Killed in Sailing Accident in Lefkada

A 52-year-old Italian woman died in Lefkada after being struck by a swinging sailboat boom while onboard a yacht with friends. Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save her

A group of tourists was plunged into tragedy in Lefkada, a popular Greek Ionian island, when a 52-year-old woman was fatally struck on the head by a sailing boat component while onboard a vessel she was traveling on.

According to local reports, the incident occurred while the yacht was anchored in a small bay between the Diavlos area and Plagia. Two Italian couples were on board when, under circumstances that have not yet been fully clarified, the boat’s boom suddenly swung and struck the 52-year-old Italian woman in the neck. A plausible scenario for the tragic accident is that high winds caused the boom to swing towards the woman.

The Coast Guard and emergency medical services were immediately alerted. The woman was transported to the marina, where paramedics took over and attempted to provide first aid. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on her way to Lefkada General Hospital.

It is worth noting that the boom is one of the most familiar parts of a sailing vessel. It is the horizontal spar attached to the sail, which holds it in place and assists in maneuvering the vessel.
