A major fire erupted on Thursday evening at a garbage collection, landfill and recycling center near the Cretan port city of Chania (Hania).
As seen on images and video from the site, thousands of tons of rubbish were burning, resulting in a massive fire brigade response.
No injuries of danger to nearby facilities were reported.
Besides dousing the fire with water and flame retardants, emergency crews were also using bulldozers to cover the conflagration with dirt.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated development, felony arson charges were filed by the Athens first instance prosecutor’s office against a priest for a wildfire that erupted in the Markopoulo area, east of Athens proper.
According to reports, the clergyman was seen on CCTV footage next to a luxury residence starting a fire. He was arrested on Wednesday, although the day the wildfire erupted was not clear.
He will be led before an investigating magistrate, while a fine of nearly 1,690 euros was immediately imposed as part of an administrative reprimand.
