A 61 year old man died Wednesday morning after falling onto the tracks of the Athens Metro at the Agios Antonios station, according to Greek media reports.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. under circumstances that remain unclear. Early reports indicated the fall may have been a suicide attempt, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Ten firefighters and four vehicles were dispatched to recover the man from the tracks.
Service disruption and restoration
The incident forced a temporary halt to operations at three consecutive stations on Line 2: Anthoupoli, Peristeri and Agios Antonios. Agios Antonios, located in the western Athens district of the same name, sits on the Elliniko to Anthoupoli line, one of the network’s busiest routes connecting the northwestern suburbs to the southern coast.
STASY, the company that operates Athens’s metro, tram and trolley network, later confirmed that service had been fully restored across the entire Elliniko to Anthoupoli stretch of Line 2, with trains again running normally system wide.
