Μake us preferred on Google A 59-year-old man has been arrested in Sindos, near Thessaloniki, northern Greece, on suspicion of intentionally starting six fires over four days, according to the Hellenic Fire Service.
The arrest was carried out by investigators from the Fire Service units responsible for investigating arson-related crimes.
According to the investigation, the man is accused to have caused six fires between Aug. 8 and 11 while traveling through the area in his vehicle.
The fires reportedly involved dry grass, reeds and agricultural land.
Two fires burned dozens of acres
One fire broke out on Saturday, Aug. 8, burning approximately 20 stremmas of agricultural land. A stremma is a Greek unit of land measurement equivalent to about 1,000 square meters, meaning the fire affected roughly 20,000 square meters.
Another fire broke out on Sunday, Aug. 9, burning approximately 15 stremmas, or about 15,000 square meters.
On Tuesday, Aug. 11, the suspect started four additional fires in the same area, according to investigators.
A criminal case has been filed against the 59-year-old on charges of intentional and repeated arson. He is expected to appear before the competent prosecutor.
