Maria Karystianou, who leads a group called “Tempi Relatives’ Association,” whose purpose is to shed light on the tragic railway accident that claimed the lives of 57 people in 2023, submitted a document signed by 1.32 million citizens to the Greek Parliament on Monday morning, calling for the revision of the Greek Constitution.

Karystianou, who is the mother of one of the victims and emerged as one of the key figures following the fatal Tempi train crash, spearheading efforts to shed light on the tragic incident and bring those responsible to justice, told journalists the initiative aimed to put an end to political impunity.

The move by the Association of the Tempi Family Victims comes as a continuation of the social and political upheaval sparked by the railway accident. The group’s action brings to the fore its demands for transparency, accountability, and institutional change.

During her brief encounter with reporters outside parliament, Maria Karystianou stated, “We want to put an end to impunity. We await to see how Parliament will respond to our request.”

Karystianou, along with a group of people escorting her, observed a one-minute silence in front of Parliament’s main entrance.

Meanwhile, opposition parties were in an uproar after the former Transport Minister Kostas Ach. Karamanlis, who was forced to resign after the accident, expressed the desire to be examined by a magistrate appointed by the Judicial Council. Sources from PASOK accused the government of employing “ongoing cover-up tactics,” while the New Left described the day as “a day of disgrace.”

Maria Karystianou had already announced the Association of Tempi Victims’ action, as well as her arrival at Parliament, in a Facebook post on Friday. In fact, in that post, she described the day as “historic,” stating that it “marks the restoration of democracy in Greece.”
