Greek authorities are intensifying their investigation into the double murder at a campground in Finikounda, a coastal village in southern Greece, as new developments emerge that could soon lead to an arrest.
Will opened points to key witness
On Friday, the city court of Pylos opened the will of the 68-year-old camping site owner, who was fatally shot. The will, drafted just three days before his death, left more than 95% of his estate to his nephew, who is also the sole witness to the murder and considered a key figure in the investigation.
In his testament, the 68-year-old described his nephew as a “very good and hardworking young man”. He cited a sudden threat to his life, noting that he had survived two prior attacks in the past 20 days, which prompted him to revise his will and exclude certain relatives.
The deceased also left 8.5 acres near the beach to the campground’s caretaker, who was also murdered. Notably, his sister and niece were excluded from the inheritance. Authorities have reportedly obtained the previous 2024 will and have requested its expedited opening, as it may provide further clues in solving the case.
Police are working to map the route taken by the killer on a black scooter. A new MEGA video shows the suspect riding toward the Ilia region, even stopping for gas outside the Kyparissia police station before continuing.
Digital investigation underway
The victims’ mobile phones are being examined in forensic labs, with calls, messages, photos, and internet searches scrutinized. The goal is to identify any digital connections between the killer and the victims.
As investigators continue to piece together the timeline, the combination of the newly opened will, video footage, and digital evidence could prove crucial in unraveling the Finikounda double homicide.
“They Have Evidence,” Police Say
Speaking to Greek media, police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidu said officers are moving “steadily and methodically” despite facing “objective difficulties” in the case.
“Homicide detectives continue to surprise us with how quietly and effectively they work,” she noted. “They have gathered evidence, and while the suspect hasn’t yet been identified, the investigation is progressing.”
Dimoglidu added that since neither of the victims had any prior criminal record or issues with law enforcement, authorities are focusing on a possible personal motive rather than a financial or organized crime connection.
Earlier on Friday former police union president George Kalliakmanis suggested that the suspect could be someone already connected to the case.
“It’s a mystery, but we may be surprised when we find out who the killer is,” he said. “There’s a strong possibility it’s the same person who shot one of the victims with an air gun some time ago.”
Kalliakmanis added that while the motive remains unclear, investigators appear confident. “I believe the police already know who did it,” he said, “and everything indicates that an arrest will be made very soon.”
