Greek authorities are working to unravel the mystery surrounding a 3-year-old girl found drowned on the beach of Palaio Faliro, a coastal suburb of Athens. Three days after her body was discovered near a popular beach, the child remains unidentified, and no family or guardian has reported her missing.
The official cause of death is drowning, according to forensic examiners, though the possibility of criminal involvement has not been ruled out. Despite a lack of visible signs of abuse, investigators continue to explore all scenarios—particularly given the eerie fact that no one has come forward to claim or identify the child.
Authorities are especially puzzled by the long-sleeved, one-piece swimsuit the girl was wearing. The suit, reportedly manufactured in Brazil and not available for sale online or through international retailers, may have been acquired secondhand. Investigators are showing the girl’s photo and the swimsuit to local lifeguards, residents, and business owners, hoping someone may recognize her.
The girl’s appearance suggests she may be of Arab descent, raising the possibility that she could be the child of an undocumented migrant. This has led police to search migrant housing facilities across the Athens region and cross-reference lists of missing children, so far without results.
Another troubling detail: forensic findings show the girl’s body had not been in the water for more than an hour, but her time of death could have occurred up to 24 hours earlier. This suggests the body may have been moved post-mortem, raising further questions about the circumstances of her death.
Former police official Giorgos Kalliakmanis noted that “the child might have been with someone who either panicked and left her after she drowned—or met the same fate.” However, no other victims have been discovered in the area.
Divers from the Hellenic Coast Guard continue to search the surrounding waters, trying to determine whether others may have drowned alongside her.
As of now, the case remains open and unresolved, with police urging anyone who might recognize the child or her swimsuit to come forward. The incident has captured national attention and prompted concerns over the vulnerabilities of children in marginalized or undocumented communities.
