The mother of New Democracy (ND) member Afroditi Nestora died on Wednesday, from injuries sustained in a firebomb attack that targeted her daughter’s home during a series of coordinated arson attacks in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki.
The 72-year-old woman suffered extensive burns after an incendiary device exploded outside the family’s residence at approximately 4:35 a.m. on Tuesday. She was rushed to the hospital and placed in intensive care but succumbed to her injuries a day later.
The device, planted at the entrance of the apartment building, sparked a fire that spread to the first floor and destroyed two parked cars. Firefighters were called to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control.
Nestora remains hospitalized with burns to her hands and feet but is reported to be out of danger. Her father, who was also injured in the attack, is in stable condition.
The attack on Nestora’s home was one of three coordinated firebombings carried out within a span of just 17 minutes. The other targets were the homes of Zisis Ioakimovic, president of the New Democracy Thessaloniki Steering Committee, and former MP Savvas Anastasiadis.
Political leaders condemned the attacks and expressed their condolences to the family. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Nestora in hospital on Wednesday, vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice.
“Violence has no place in an organized society, and those who commit such acts are nothing more than common criminals and will be treated as such. We will find those who committed this despicable act and bring them to justice,” Mitsotakis said.
Police have launched an investigation and are examining individuals linked to anti-authoritarian networks, including people associated with previously occupied buildings in the Thessaloniki area. Authorities are seeking to identify the three perpetrators believed to have carried out the coordinated attacks, which are being treated as acts of terrorism.
