Nearly 27,000 alcohol breath tests were conducted across Attica in one week as Greek traffic police carried out an extensive operation aimed at preventing traffic accidents and tackling dangerous driving behavior.
The Attica Traffic Police Directorate conducted the operation from the early hours of Aug. 17 through the early hours of Monday, Aug. 24. Officers from the Traffic Accident Prevention and Enforcement Groups, along with local traffic police departments, took part.
A total of 26,986 alcohol tests were carried out, resulting in 197 violations. Fourteen drivers were arrested after being found to have driven under the influence of alcohol, with readings above 0.60 milligrams per liter.
According to the Hellenic Police, positive alcohol readings accounted for 0.73% of all tests conducted.
More than 5,000 traffic violations
During the same operation, officers recorded 5,297 violations of Greece’s Highway Traffic Code.
The violations included speeding, failure to wear a protective helmet, using a cellphone while driving, running red lights and driving without the required license.
Police also immobilized 990 vehicles, 79 of which had to be removed by tow truck. Authorities additionally confiscated 926 driver’s licenses and 277 vehicle registration documents.
Separate speeding enforcement
Traffic police also carried out a separate operation targeting excessive speed. Officers conducted 788 vehicle checks and recorded 276 speeding violations.
Among the most serious cases were drivers caught traveling at 170 and 165 kilometers per hour on roads where the maximum permitted speed was just 50 kph.
Traffic police said enforcement against drunk driving and other dangerous traffic violations will continue.
