The investigation into the deadly shootout in Vorizia, Crete, has entered a crucial phase as police continue to search for the weapons used in the double murder that shocked the island. Six people have now been arrested, including the brother-in-law of the slain 39-year-old, whose role is emerging as central to the case.

Three brothers involved in the incident remain in custody at the Heraklion Police Headquarters, while the male victim’s brother-in-law is being held separately for security reasons. Two more relatives, both injured during the gunfire, are under police guard at Heraklion University Hospital, where prosecutors and an investigating judge are expected to take their depositions.

Both men face charges of intentional homicide and attempted homicide, accused of participating in the deadly confrontation that left two people dead.

Search for the Missing Weapons

Despite extensive searches of homes, farmland, and shepherd huts linked to the suspects and their families across Crete, none of the firearms used in the shootout have been recovered. Eyewitnesses reported gunfire erupting from multiple directions, involving several weapons.

So far, police have found only three shotguns and ammunition, but investigators believe that 9mm pistols, a Kalashnikov rifle, and hunting weapons were used. Authorities suspect the missing guns may be handed over later, once those involved feel legally protected.

Video Links Brother-in-Law to the Shooting

According to reports, a video obtained by police allegedly shows the 43-year-old brother-in-law firing toward the area where the fatal clash occurred, from an elevated position near the family’s homes.

He has already been arrested for firearms violations after police discovered a shotgun and cartridges in his home. Authorities are now preparing a new arrest warrant, linking him directly to the murder of the female victim.

Ballistic experts believe she was shot with a Kalashnikov rifle from above, consistent with the trajectory of her fatal wound — entering through her shoulder and exiting through her pelvis — suggesting a high-powered weapon fired from a distance.

Witnesses also claim the 43-year-old was not alone at the time but accompanied by another man, whose role remains unclear.

Key Testimonies Expected

At Heraklion University Hospital, prosecutors are set to question the two injured suspects — a 25-year-old brother of the men who surrendered earlier this week and a 30-year-old relative. Their testimonies are expected to shed light on both how the shootout began and where the missing weapons might be.

Families Deny Involvement

The three brothers, aged 29, 27, and 19, who turned themselves in on Tuesday, are due to testify on Monday. The wife of the 27-year-old insists her husband was unarmed and only sought to protect his family, including their ten-day-old baby, as tensions flared after a series of insults and threats.

“My husband wasn’t holding a gun — he was trying to protect me and our newborn,” she reportedly told investigators, describing moments of fear and chaos before the gunfire erupted.
