The suspect was believed to be in Nafplio at the time, but investigators now confirm he traveled to the Greek capital specifically to carry out the attack. The victim, a 43-year-old Polish academic, was gunned down in broad daylight on July 4 outside the residence of his ex-wife, while on his way to meet his children.
Suspect Claims He Acted Alone
In his testimony, the 35-year-old admitted to planning and executing the killing alone, insisting that his partner — a 40-year-old economist and former spouse of the victim — had no involvement in the crime. “I’m not a criminal. I did what I did for the good of my children and my family,” he reportedly told investigators.
He claimed the professor had intended to take the children to the United States, a move he said would have devastated his partner. “He treated her and the children terribly. If he took them away, she would have died inside,” he added.
Despite the suspect’s claim of acting alone, the woman has been arrested and faces charges as the alleged instigator of the murder. She continues to deny any connection to the crime.
Police Track Down Suspects Through Rental Car, Recovered Phone
The investigation progressed rapidly after police obtained security footage from a nearby square showing the gunman fleeing the scene and entering a vehicle. That vehicle was traced to a rental company, leading authorities to three foreign nationals accused of transporting and later helping the shooter escape.
The three men told police they were paid to drive the suspect to Agia Paraskevi but claimed they were unaware of his intentions. However, investigators say the men later tried to extort €50,000 from the gunman in exchange for their silence.
A major breakthrough came when officers recovered a discarded mobile phone believed to belong to the shooter. Forensic analysis of the device provided crucial evidence linking the man directly to the crime.
Victim’s Ex-Wife Denies Involvement
The 40-year-old woman at the center of the case maintains her innocence, stating, “I have no involvement whatsoever in the murder of my former husband.” Prosecutors, however, accuse her of masterminding the crime — a charge that could carry significant penalties if proven in court.
As the investigation continues, authorities say more evidence is being examined, including digital communications, financial transactions, and forensic data from the crime scene.
