Athens will enforce temporary overnight road closures on Tuesday and Wednesday to allow engineers to perform structural integrity tests on several major bridges, according to local authorities. The restrictions will remain in effect from 12:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on both days, with short, intermittent traffic stoppages on key routes.
The tests, which aim to assess the stability of bridges on some of the capital’s busiest corridors, will begin Tuesday, November 25, affecting areas that connect central Athens with the coastal zone and Piraeus. Drivers heading toward the port city should expect brief disruptions on:
- The new Poseidonos Avenue exit from Palaio Faliro toward Piraeus
- The exit ramp from the Palaia Poseidonos/Ioannou Fix roundabout toward Piraeus
- Syngrou Avenue in the direction of Piraeus
- The section of Poseidonos Avenue above the exit from the SEF (Peace and Friendship Stadium) roundabout toward Ethnarchou Makariou and Dim. Falireos
Additional closures will follow on Wednesday, November 26, affecting several key junctions near Piraeus and along one of the city’s main north–south arteries. These include:
- The Alipedo exit bridge leading toward Iroon Polytechneiou Avenue
- The elevated section of Kifisou Avenue
- The interchange bridge at Kifisou Avenue and Peiraios Street
Authorities advise motorists to plan ahead, use alternate routes when possible, and allow extra travel time during the overnight testing windows. While disruptions are expected to be brief, officials say the structural evaluations are necessary to ensure long-term safety on roads that carry thousands of vehicles daily.
The traffic measures will be lifted each morning at 7:00 a.m., with normal circulation resuming immediately afterward.
