Police arrested a 24-year-old man of Palestinian origin who reportedly attacked an officer and two bystanders last evening (September 23) in downtown Athens.
According to the police report, it all began around 7:50 p.m. on Marni Street, where the young man assaulted a foreign national with a glass bottle, seriously injuring him in the head. He then allegedly stole a pouch containing important documents and €600 in cash. The victim was rushed to “Georgios Gennimatas” General Hospital.
The 24-year-old, who claims to be homeless, is reportedly known to the authorities.
A few hours later, around 10 p.m., the perpetrator attempted another attack, this time targeting a young woman at the intersection of Socratous and Chalkokondyli streets. Armed with a knife and scissors, he tried to stab her in the abdomen.
After being notified, police officers quickly arrived at the scene. The 24-year-old put up strong resistance, biting one officer and kicking another. Despite his violent reaction, the police managed to subdue him and bring him to the Omonia police station.
According to an eyewitness account, the man was shouting “Alahu Akbar” while searching for targets.
The suspect, who says he is homeless and has previous run-ins with the authorities, now faces charges of attempted homicide, causing severe bodily harm, and violence against officers.
Greek authorities are reportedly in the process of re-examining the prospect of revoking the suspect’s asylum application following the attacks, pending details from police.
