A municipality in the greater Thessaloniki area this week took advantage of recent legal changes to charge several parents approximately 7,000 euros in damages for vandalism of school facilities last year.

According to a police investigation, nine juveniles were involved in two separate cases of vcandalism at two local kindergartens. The perpetrators, all secondary school pupils, were identified with the use of security camera footage from schools’ premises.

The most extensive damage occurred in the summer of 2025 at the 7th Kindergarten of Thermi, where four juveniles caused damages estimated at around 4,400 euros. A few months later another five minors caused 2,500 euros in damages at a kindergarten in the Souroti township.

The municipality promptly repaired the facilities and at the same time initiated administrative procedures to bill the parents of the alleged offenders.

Legal action would have followed had the parents or guardians refused to comply. Nevertheless, all of the parents contacted paid the full amount, according to press reports.
