Partner Jailed After Woman Found Dead in Athens Apartment

A 38-year-old man has been ordered into pre-trial detention over the death of his 31-year-old partner, who was found dead in her home. He denies murder charges, claiming her death was linked to serious health problems and a fall.

A 38-year-old man has been placed in pre-trial detention following the death of his 31-year-old partner, who was found dead in her apartment in the Kolonos district of Athens on February 28.

The suspect appeared before judicial authorities after giving testimony and now faces multiple charges. Prosecutors have charged him with intentional homicide and aggravated domestic violence, a felony offense described as repeatedly causing severe physical pain or exhaustion that could endanger health. He is also accused of illegal possession of weapons and the unlawful procurement and possession of banned anabolic substances.

According to reports, the investigating judge and prosecutor ordered the man’s detention in connection with the domestic violence allegations. During his testimony, the suspect reportedly declared that he is “categorically innocent.”

In a written statement submitted to the court, he attributed his partner’s death to medical causes, referring to findings from the autopsy. He claimed the woman suffered from advanced liver cirrhosis and severe liver disease, conditions that can cause anemia and dizziness, which he suggested may have led to a fatal fall.

“I regret saying it, but her death was inevitable,” the suspect reportedly stated, adding that her health had deteriorated significantly. He also expressed “deep sadness” over her death, saying he loved and cared for her and had tried to help her deal with what he described as a serious alcohol dependency.

Addressing injuries found on the woman’s body, the accused denied they were the result of violence. Instead, he argued that they were linked to her poor health and repeated falls.

He also described the events of the day she died, saying he had visited a pharmacy to bring her medication before leaving for work. When he returned home around 3 p.m., he said he found her lying face down on the floor and bleeding.

According to his account, he turned her over and realized she was dead. He then called for help from relatives living upstairs, asking them to contact emergency services immediately.
