The municipality of Prespes in northern Greece is set to transform the region into a prime destination for nature enthusiasts with the launch of a new 32-kilometer hiking trail network. The project, officially approved with the signing of the contract by Mayor Giorgos Stergiou, aims to promote sustainable tourism while preserving the area’s unique natural environment.
The project, titled “Construction of a Trail Network in the Municipality of Prespes,” has a budget of €318,626.58 and is co-financed through the Western Macedonia Operational Program 2021–2027, with contributions from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and national resources.
According to the municipality, the initiative will involve the creation and improvement of trails through municipal forests, providing visitors with safe and accessible routes to explore the natural landscape. The project will also include small-scale infrastructure such as scenic viewpoints, outdoor rest areas, and clearly marked paths to enhance both accessibility and safety.
By combining nature conservation with eco-friendly tourism, the municipality expects to boost the local economy while protecting the region’s forests and wildlife. The trails will offer a platform for visitors to enjoy outdoor recreation, while fostering awareness and appreciation of the area’s environmental value.
“This project represents a significant step toward supporting the local economy through tourism, while preserving the unique natural beauty of our region,” the municipality stated. The initiative reflects a growing trend in Greece of promoting sustainable tourism that highlights the country’s natural landscapes, encouraging both residents and visitors to engage with the environment responsibly.
