The sister of the former king of Greece, the late Constantine, and sister of the previous Queen consort of Spain Sofia, Princess Irene, passed away on Thursday in Madrid at the age of 83.
Irene, a member of the one-time Greek royal family, was in ill-health over the recent period.
Her passing was announced by the Spanish royal house, as she was an aunt to King Felipe XI.
“Their Majesties the King and Queen and Her Majesty Queen Sofia regret to announce the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Irene of Greece at 11:40 a.m. today at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid.”
An announcement on funeral and burial arrangements is pending.
