Tensions flared in the Greek city of Volos during a protest against the visit of Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris, which was carrying passengers, which protesters claimed included members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The demonstration began in the city center, where some three dozen protesters blocked a main street to stop a bus transporting Israeli tourists from the port. Riot police (MAT) intervened to clear the road, resulting in some shoving, verbal exchanges, and a temporary traffic disruption.
March to the Port Meets Heavy Police Presence
Earlier in the day, protesters marched through Volos toward the passenger port and main pier, where a strong police presence prevented their entry. When demonstrators attempted to breach the gate, riot police used stun grenades to disperse the crowd.
One stun grenade reportedly landed near protester Giannis Mangos, father of the late Vassilis Mangos, whose 2020 death was attributed by his father and supporters to earlier police abuse.
Palestinian Solidarity Messages Prominent
Carrying Palestinian flags and banners expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people, protesters had gathered in the early morning in the city’s Palaia district before moving toward the port.
Slogans included “Freedom for Palestine” and “Tempi, Pylos, Mangos, Palestine – No peace without justice,” linking the protest to other high-profile social and political causes in Greece.
Strong Police Deployment Throughout
Police maintained a visible presence during the entire demonstration, following the march through the central streets of Volos.
