Greek regional authorities have submitted a €22.46 million development plan aimed at addressing long-standing economic and demographic challenges in the Agrafa mountain region, seeking funding under the EU-backed “Central Greece 2021–2027” program.
According to a regional statement, €5 million of the plan would be financed directly through the Central Greece operational program.
The initiative forms part of a broader €30 million government pledge for the development of Agrafa, with additional funding expected from other national and EU programs in cooperation with relevant ministries.
The proposal follows a funding call issued in May 2025 by Central Greece Governor Fanos Spanos, after which regional and local authorities jointly drafted a strategy tailored to the area’s specific challenges.
The plan focuses on upgrading basic infrastructure and services, strengthening local economic activity while preserving natural and cultural heritage, countering population ageing and outmigration, and reducing geographic isolation and social inequalities.
Priority projects include road construction and settlement regeneration, water supply and wastewater systems, flood protection works, alternative tourism infrastructure, promotion of the region’s tourism identity, preservation of cultural assets, development of local natural resources, and improvements to healthcare and social welfare services.
