Rescue on Zakynthos After Tourist Gets Trapped on Cliffs

An American tourist was dramatically rescued from steep cliffs at Greece’s famous Shipwreck Beach on Zakynthos after becoming stranded in a dangerous, inaccessible area, triggering a large-scale emergency response

Moments of intense anxiety unfolded at the Shipwreck Beach (Navagio beach) area on the Greek island of Zakynthos when a 22-year-old American man became trapped on a steep, inaccessible cliffside, prompting a major mobilization of emergency services.

The rescue operation was launched immediately after an alert was raised by a local business employee, who realized the young man was unable to safely leave the extremely difficult terrain where he had found himself.

Strong firefighting forces rushed to the scene, including 20 firefighters and 7 vehicles from the Fire Service and the 17th Special Disaster Response Unit, battling the area’s harsh and unstable landscape.

Using specialized mountain-rescue equipment, firefighters carefully approached the 22-year-old, secured him, and managed to extract him safely without injuries, despite highly demanding conditions.

He was then handed over to an ambulance crew, who provided first aid on site. Shortly afterward, he was able to leave and return to his accommodation.

Footage from the operation captures the firefighters’ challenging ascent across the sheer cliffs of Navagio and the critical moments leading up to the safe rescue of the young man.
