Salamina: Shocking Images of Mountains of Trash and Debris

Just 24 hours after wildfires struck, the island is left facing another danger, mountains of garbage, branches, and rubble

Just 24 hours after deadly wildfires struck Salamina, images from the largest island in the Saronic Gulf are sparking outrage among residents and visitors alike.

Piles of trash, mountains of rubble, dry brush, and branches now litter the island, prompting residents to take matters into their own hands to prevent further damage.

One example is the Steno Faneromenis Association, which paid out of pocket for a bulldozer to clear the mass of branches and garbage that had piled up in the area, calling it a “ticking time bomb.”

In Agios Georgios and Psili Ammos, the images of trash and debris of every kind are shocking, with the municipality’s garbage trucks appearing, based on the photos, to be collecting only select loads, unable to clear the full volume of waste sitting just steps from beachgoers.

According to reports, the municipality’s trucks equipped to handle rubble and branches remain out of service due to mechanical breakdowns.
