Romanian authorities have completed the formal identification of the seven Greek citizens who were killed in a road accident in Romania on Tuesday January 27, confirming that all were supporters of PAOK and were traveling together at the time of the crash.
Greek officials said the victims were all young men, with the oldest aged 30. The identification process was finalized following lengthy forensic examinations and close coordination between Romanian and Greek authorities, after which the families were officially notified.
As authorities manage the next steps, Greek officials also confirmed that all three injured PAOK supporters will be transferred to Greece to continue their treatment. On Thursday morning, a specially equipped aircraft operated by the Greek Ministry of Health is scheduled to depart from Elefsina Air Base for Romania to carry out the medical evacuation.
The three injured survivors will be taken to Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki. According to available information, two of the injured are in improved condition. The third suffered multiple injuries and bilateral pulmonary contusions but is not in life-threatening condition. All three have now passed the immediate danger, officials said.
With the identification process complete, procedures are also underway for the repatriation of the bodies of the seven PAOK supporters to Greece. A Greek Air Force C-130 aircraft is on standby at the Elefsina Air Base near Athens, pending the completion of all required medical and administrative protocols. According to available information, Romanian authorities are expected to issue the necessary documents on Thursday.
Greek diplomatic authorities have been in continuous contact with Romanian officials since the accident. Staff from the Greek Embassy in Bucharest are on site to assist with the process and to support the families of the victims.
Greek Ambassador to Romania Evangelia (Lili) Grammatika said the immediate priorities are the swift repatriation of the victims and the medical care and safe transfer of those injured. In her statement she also stressed that embassy staff was mobilized immediately after the accident and praised the close cooperation with Romanian authorities at all levels. The investigation into the causes of the crash is ongoing and is being conducted by the competent Romanian services, she added.
The deaths of the seven football supporters have drawn condolences from Greece and Romania and have resonated deeply among Greek communities at home and abroad, as authorities continue to manage the aftermath of one of the deadliest recent incidents involving Greek citizens overseas.
