Storm Adel continues to batter Greece for a third consecutive day, prompting authorities to close schools in several regions to ensure the safety of students and staff. Strong rains and an increased risk of flooding have led municipalities to suspend in-person classes.
In Attica, unexpected heavy rainfall on Friday morning led authorities to close schools in Dionysos and Penteli, even though they had initially opened. Parents were notified to pick up their children immediately.
Regions with School Closures on Friday, November 28:
- Evrota: All schools, from kindergartens to high schools, as well as municipal childcare centers and the Special Education and Training Center (EEEEK), are closed. The decision was made to prevent accidents and protect students, parents, and staff.
- Chios: The 3rd Gymnasium of Chios will remain closed, with lessons conducted online via Webex. The closure follows reports of water entering the school building during previous storms, and the mayor emphasized safety as the top priority.
- Kilkis: Schools at all levels will remain closed, not due to Storm Adel, but because of the local holiday honoring the 15 Martyrs, the municipality’s patron saints. The holiday affects all educational institutions, including kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and municipal childcare programs. Classes are expected to resume on Monday, December 1.
Areas with Schools Open:
In Corfu, schools in both the Southern and Central Municipalities will operate as usual. Local authorities determined that weather conditions do not pose a risk to students, and no suspensions were deemed necessary.
