Severe Weather Set to Hit Greece With Storms and Snow

Meteorologists warn of an intense weather system from Saturday through Monday, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, strong winds and snowfall, including in lower-altitude areas, before conditions gradually improve midweek

Greece is bracing for a new wave of severe weather over the coming days, with meteorologists warning of prolonged and intense conditions that could disrupt travel and daily life across much of the country.

According to forecasts, successive weather systems will affect the country over the next 24 hours, with the most significant deterioration expected from Saturday afternoon through Monday night. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hail and snowfall are all expected, with impacts felt well beyond mountainous regions.

Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis said the system is likely to bring not only large volumes of rain but also substantial snowfall, potentially reaching areas at lower elevations. He described the weather as seasonally typical for Greece’s geographical location, while cautioning against unnecessary alarm caused by the naming of weather systems.

“Weather systems are not fixed or identical as they move,” he explained, noting that conditions can change in intensity, timing and location.

Widespread Storms and Strong Rainfall

Another meteorologist, Theodoros Kolydas, also highlighted the risks, saying heavy rain and strong thunderstorms are expected from Saturday evening, peaking on Sunday and continuing into Monday afternoon. He noted that the system shows strong atmospheric dynamics, increasing the likelihood of intense and persistent rainfall.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has already flagged the potential for severe phenomena in its general forecast.

Day-by-Day Forecast Overview

  • Saturday: Cloud cover will increase, with rain mainly in western regions and isolated thunderstorms early in the day. Conditions will intensify late at night. Light snowfall is expected in central and northern mountainous areas.
  • Sunday: Rain and thunderstorms will affect the entire country, with locally severe conditions in western, central and southern mainland regions, as well as islands and coastal areas. Snow is expected in mountainous areas and, by afternoon, in semi-mountainous and low-altitude areas of northern Greece. Temperatures will drop noticeably in central and northern regions, with frost expected overnight.
  • Monday: Rain and storms will gradually weaken, especially after midday. Light snow may persist in northern mountainous areas and parts of northeastern Greece. Winds will remain strong in sea areas before easing later in the day.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Conditions are expected to stabilize, with fewer showers, rising temperatures and a gradual return to more typical winter weather. Some rain and isolated storms may reappear midweek, mainly in western and northern regions.
