The installation of smart traffic cameras across Attica is continuing, with the new systems already recording thousands of potential violations by drivers.
The cameras, which are being placed at an increasing number of locations across the region, are designed to detect traffic offenses including running red lights, exceeding speed limits and riding motorcycles without helmets.
20,000 potential violations recorded
According to data presented deputy director of the Attica Traffic Police, authorities currently have photographic evidence of around 20,000 possible violations recorded by the smart camera network.
The material is being reviewed by traffic authorities, and confirmed violations will be sent to the drivers involved.
Authorities noted that without the use of smart cameras, the same violations would likely have reached only around 5,000 cases if they had been detected through traditional police checks.
Nearly 2,500 digital fines issued
Based on the latest figures from the Hellenic Police, 2,453 digital traffic fines have been issued so far. Only 2.11% of submitted appeals have been accepted.
Most accepted appeals were linked to technical or procedural issues, such as mismatched timestamps, unclear vehicle details or special exemptions related to seat belt use. Other cases were accepted for valid reasons, including health emergencies.
The smart camera system records a range of violations, including driving in bus lanes, speeding, red light violations, failure to wear seat belts or helmets, and mobile phone use while driving.
