Storm Kristin Brings Heavy Rain and Storms Across Greece

Storm Kristin is expected to impact large parts of Greece with intense rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible hail over several days, prompting weather warnings and heightened readiness by civil protection authorities.

Storm Kristin is set to bring a significant deterioration in weather conditions across Greece, with heavy rain, strong thunderstorms, and possible hail expected over multiple 48-hour periods in the coming days, according to Greece’s national weather service.

The most intense conditions are forecast to begin Thursday, with powerful rainstorms affecting western Greece and parts of the eastern island regions. Authorities warn that the system could cause localized flooding, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the emergency weather bulletin, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected Thursday across the Ionian islands, western mainland areas, and central Greece from early morning through midday. Western Peloponnese will be affected from morning through late afternoon, while northern Greece and the northern and eastern Aegean islands are expected to see severe weather from midday into the night. Brief but intense rainfall is also forecast for the Athens metropolitan area around midday.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has urged residents to remain vigilant and take preventive measures, as emergency response plans for flooding have been activated. Fire services in affected regions have been placed on high alert, while local authorities have been instructed to remain ready to respond to weather-related incidents.

Officials advise residents to secure loose objects, clear drainage systems, avoid flooded roads and stream crossings, and limit outdoor activities during storms. Extra caution is recommended during thunderstorms, particularly in coastal and mountainous areas, due to lightning and strong winds.

Weather conditions are expected to remain unstable through the weekend. On Friday, rain and scattered storms are forecast mainly in western and northeastern regions, with heavier rainfall possible in eastern island areas. From Saturday, storm activity is expected to expand across central and southern Greece, with locally intense rainfall and snowfall in mountainous mainland regions.

Meteorologists also warn that atmospheric conditions may favor the transport of African dust, particularly over southern parts of the country, potentially reducing air quality and visibility.

Winds will be strong at sea, reaching up to 7 on the Beaufort scale in parts of the Aegean, while temperatures will remain relatively mild for the season before gradually dropping in central and northern regions.

On Thursday, January 29, rain and thunderstorms are expected nationwide, particularly in island regions, the Peloponnese, central Greece, and northern areas. Temperatures will range from 2°C to 21°C depending on region, with Athens seeing highs of up to 16°C and Thessaloniki up to 14°C.

Authorities recommend that residents stay informed through official weather updates and follow guidance from local emergency services as Storm Kristin moves across the country.
