Severe weather over the past several hours has caused significant problems across parts of Greece, with northwestern regions bearing the brunt of the impact.
Corfu has been hit especially hard by torrential rainfall that triggered major damage in the northern part of the island. Several areas became impassable, and authorities were forced to rescue a couple and their infant after they became trapped by rising waters.
A powerful storm also struck Parga, Arta, Ioannina, and Igoumenitsa. Fields along the Kalamas River in Thesprotia were submerged, while communities across Kastoria and Epirus are assessing damage from the storm’s sweeping passage.
According to an emergency weather alert issued by the National Meteorological Service on Nov. 20, conditions are expected to gradually improve late Friday night into Saturday.
Landslides and Flooding
Heavy rainfall triggered landslides in the area of Kousades, Corfu, where an entire slope gave way, damaging parked vehicles and several homes. Roads have turned into rivers of mud, rendering the village temporarily inaccessible.
The scale of the flooding is evident in Kalamas, Thesprotia, where the plains were completely inundated. Only the very tops of small trees remained visible above the muddy water.
By 6 a.m. on Friday, another 50 millimeters of rain had fallen in Konitsa and 70 in Papingo, bringing the three-day total to more than 330 millimeters—roughly one-third of the area’s average annual rainfall.
In Kastoria, the Aliakmonas River overflowed in multiple locations, prompting a temporary ban on water consumption. The village of Grammos has been declared in a state of emergency after the river’s overflow trapped five livestock farmers along with their animals. Severe problems have been reported across the regional unit of Kastoria, particularly around Nestorio.
Unsettled Conditions to Persist
Meteorologists from Greece’s national broadcaster ERT report that northwestern regions will continue to see locally intense rain and thunderstorms. Showers are also expected in other parts of western and northern Greece. Although rainfall will persist on Saturday, its intensity should gradually ease by the afternoon.
On Sunday, temperatures are forecast to drop back to seasonal norms after nearly 10 days of unusually mild weather, accompanied by scattered showers and westerly winds. By Tuesday, southern winds and another wave of rainfall will return, mainly in the west but spreading to other regions as temperatures rise again.
