A 48-hour taxi strike is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9, and Wednesday, September 10, across Athens’ broader region, as announced by the president of the Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA).

The strike follows escalating tensions with the government over a joint ministerial decision granting transport operations to vans, a move the taxi sector strongly opposes.

The president of SATA criticized the government’s handling of the issue, describing the ministerial decision as effectively undermining the taxi industry.

He argued that previous legislation, such as Law 4530, had provided clear regulations and could have served as a model, but that current measures threaten to dismantle the sector.

Concerns were also raised regarding constitutional violations and regulatory gaps. The association points out that the ministry has failed to create an official registry or determine the number of vans allowed to operate, while the required transport application is reportedly malfunctioning, with only 10% of trips being properly reported.
