A 16-year-old student in Athens has been charged with attempted murder and illegal weapon possession after stabbing a 14-year-old classmate inside a school building, authorities said.
The attack occurred midday earlier this week in the Kypseli area, following a verbal dispute between the two girls. According to investigators, the older student used a knife during the confrontation, seriously injuring the younger girl. The victim was taken to the hospital, where she received stitches for deep wounds to her arm and abdomen and is reported to be in stable condition.
Prosecutors have filed two felony charges against the 16-year-old: attempted homicide and carrying a weapon inside a school. She is currently being held at police headquarters and is expected to appear before an investigating magistrate.
The case has sent shockwaves through the school community, with students and parents raising concerns about safety and the lack of adequate psychological support. Students told local media that the presence of school psychologists is insufficient to address escalating violence among minors.
According to witness accounts, the accused had transferred to the school just one week earlier after being expelled from another school for inappropriate and aggressive behavior. Testimonies describe a pattern of violent conduct, including attacks on classmates, verbal abuse toward teachers, and acts of vandalism.
Authorities also confirmed that this was not the first violent incident involving the teenager. In July, she allegedly stabbed another 16-year-old in a separate incident, injuring her in the back. In October, she was arrested again during a fight involving minors and was found carrying a knife with an 18-centimeter blade.
Criminology experts have questioned how the student was transferred without a thorough risk assessment. “A child who had already shown serious violent behavior was simply moved to another school,” said criminologist Kelly Ioannou, emphasizing the lack of standardized protocols to evaluate dangerous behavior among minors.
The girl’s mother told local media that it is impossible for her to monitor her daughter’s actions at all times.
The incident has also triggered unrest at the school, which was briefly occupied by students in protest. Although classes were disrupted, teachers returned and the school is expected to resume normal operations.
