Teen Fights for Life After Fall from School Balcony in Athens

The 13-year-old girl remains in critical condition after a four-hour surgery, as authorities investigate how she fell from a school balcony during recess

A 13-year-old student is fighting for her life after falling from a first-floor window at her school in Haidari, with doctors describing her condition as extremely critical following emergency surgery.

The girl underwent a complex, four-hour operation after being transferred—intubated—from Attikon Hospital to the specialized pediatric facility “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital. She is now being closely monitored in the intensive care unit, where the next 24 hours are considered crucial.

According to medical sources, the teenager suffered severe head injuries, internal chest bleeding, and pelvic fractures. During surgery, she reportedly went into cardiac arrest multiple times, with doctors managing to revive her after what they described as extraordinary efforts. Her head hematoma remains the primary concern for treating physicians.

The incident occurred during a school break under unclear circumstances. Witnesses said the girl had been sitting on a balcony railing before falling from a height of approximately 13 feet (four meters) as students were returning to their classrooms.

Emergency responders arrived quickly after the school nurse provided initial assistance. An ambulance transported the student to the hospital within minutes.

The girl’s mother described the moment she learned of the incident. “I was at work when the school called to tell me my child had fallen from the balcony. I rushed there in panic. No one could tell me exactly what had happened,” she said.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall. Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki said the child’s health is the top priority, adding that a thorough inquiry is already underway.
