A 14-year-old boy suffered severe injuries to his hand after a firecracker exploded while he was holding it during Easter celebrations in Athens.
The incident occurred on Easter Sunday outside the Church of Saint Vlassios in the suburb of Menidi.
According to initial reports, the boy had found the firecracker and tried to throw it, but it detonated in his hand, causing significant damage.
He was immediately taken to the “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital in Athens, where doctors performed emergency surgery.
Medical teams managed to save the boy’s hand, avoiding amputation despite the severity of the injuries. They did however have to remove part of his thumb.
Doctors said the teenager will require specialized treatment and rehabilitation to ensure that his fingers remain functional.
The teenager was arrested on charges related to illegal possession of firecrackers, while his father was also detained on charges if child neglect. Both were released by prosecutorial order.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with the use of firecrackers during Easter celebrations, a period when such accidents are reported every year.
