Two young men have been arrested in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, following the theft of more than €4,000 from a business cashbox, after police tracked them down following a pursuit. Investigations are ongoing to locate additional suspects.
Theft inside a local shop
According to police information, the incident took place on Saturday night at a small retail store in the city. The group of suspects entered the premises and distracted an employee before breaking into the office area.
They then managed to access the business cashbox and stole approximately €4,040, as well as a bag belonging to a worker, before fleeing the scene.
The employee immediately alerted the authorities, triggering a large-scale police search.
The following night, police located two of the suspects traveling in a vehicle in another area of the city. When officers attempted to stop them, the pair tried to escape, accelerating and entering a residential district in an effort to evade arrest.
However, police units managed to intercept and detain them after a brief chase.
Stolen money partially recovered
During the arrest, officers found €1,167 in their possession, which was later returned to the business.
The suspects are now facing charges of theft and resisting arrest. The case has been assigned to the local crimes investigation unit in Thessaloniki.
Investigators also discovered that one of the suspects, a 23-year-old man, had two outstanding convictions related to theft, carrying a combined prison sentence of 12 months.
