A Thessaloniki court has found the 23-year-old passenger of a car guilty for failing to report a fatal accident that claimed the life of 21-year-old student Emma in November 2022.

A Three-Member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki sentenced her to a two-year prison term, which can be converted to a daily fine of €10. The verdict relates to her failure to notify authorities or prevent the driver from leaving the scene after the accident.

The driver, a 30-year-old man of Albanian origin, had previously been sentenced to 16.5 years in prison for causing Emma’s death while driving at excessive speed—104 km/h in a 50 km/h zone—in a modified and unsafe vehicle.

The 23-year-old passenger did not attend the hearing, being represented by a lawyer who argued she was terrified and “held hostage” by the driver’s actions.

Emma’s parents, originally from Crete, described the trial as a necessary step in their long struggle for justice. After the accident, Emma had spent five days in the intensive care unit at Papageorgiou Hospital before succumbing to her injuries. In a gesture of generosity, her family donated her organs.

The appeal court proceedings have been postponed to the autumn.
